This will be followed by a detailed periodontal examination which involves measuring the position of the gums and determining whether or not spaces (pockets) have opened up between the gums and the teeth. It is important that before any treatment is suggested, the severity and extent of the disease are established. X-rays and photographs may also be taken on this appointment. Once all the information has been obtained, we will discuss the findings in detail and suggest any treatment that may be required.
Periodontitis (gum disease) is a condition that causes bone destruction around the teeth, resulting in loss of support and reduced stability, which can lead to loosening of the teeth and tooth loss. Gum disease is a life-long condition that cannot be ‘cured’, just as diabetes, but one can stabilise the condition so it no longer actively destroys the bone and gum which supports the teeth.
Virtually all gum disease is preventable and treatable if caught early and a high level of dental hygiene is maintained through your life. Gum disease also has effects around the body, contributing to heart disease, damage to blood vessels and low birth weight babies. Non‐surgical treatment options for gingival recession defects include establishment of optimal plaque control, removal of overhanging subgingival restorations, behaviour change interventions, and use of desensitising agents.
Book NowOsseous surgery, also known as pocket reduction surgery, is a procedure that gets rid of bacteria living in pockets. During the procedure, a surgeon cuts back your gums, removes the bacteria, and repairs damaged bone. Scaling and root planing helps remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from around teeth. It also smooths each tooth's root surface so that gum tissue can reattach itself to the tooth. This helps shrink the pocket.
Book NowMany techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession, including connective tissue grafting, or CTG; various flap designs; orthodontics; and guided tissue regeneration, or GTR.
Book NowCrowns must be able to firmly affix to an existing tooth. Crown lengthening can help. We can perform crown lengthening by recontouring gum tissue, and sometimes bone, to expose more of a tooth's surface for a crown. It's a common procedure and often takes less than an hour to complete.
Book NowFollowing completion of treatment and arrest of inflammation, supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) is employed to reduce the probability of re-infection and progression of the disease; to maintain teeth without pain, excessive mobility or persistent infection in the long term, and to prevent related oral diseases.
